The Challenge of Pursuing Dreams

Today's entry features writer Mark Paulson, a friend of CPAF.  May you be encouraged by his story and revelations about pursuing the dreams to which God has called you.

This article is written to anyone who ever gets frustrated or discouraged in the pursuit of dreams.

Pursuing our dreams can be challenging.  Many years ago, when I was in college, I was practicing a Beethoven sonata.  The piece was difficult, and I was struggling with it.  Suddenly, I heard the same piece being played perfectly in the practice room next to me.  The person who was playing was only eight years old.  I continued to work on the sonata with much more determination.  After several weeks of practice, I was finally able to play the first movement reasonably well.

The day before my piano jury, I went to the music library to hear some recordings.  I found several pianists who had recorded all of the 32 Beethoven sonatas.  This caused me to wonder why I should even bother to continue my studies.

Throughout my life, I have attempted many projects.  I have published a book and composed two musicals.  I have given several solo performances, and my students have presented numerous piano recitals.  I am even the director of music at a church.  However, it is still frustrating to observe the greater accomplishments of other individuals.  It's so easy to become envious of people who receive significant recognition for their talents.

When I compare myself to other artists, I sometimes ask, "Why do I bother?"  What is the motivation to keep going when I have these feelings of rejection or inadequacy?  It can be very difficult to continue without meaningful answers.

When Jesus came to Earth, he experienced rejection.  He was despised by many people, including members of his own family.  However, he continued his mission.  One of his primary objectives was to give glory and honor to his Heavenly Father.  He came to Earth to serve him.  It is important for us to have this same attitude and purpose.

God has given everyone unique talents so that we can use them his honor and glory.  Other people may receive praise and recognition from the general public, but that should not be our ultimate goal.  The gifts we possess should be used for him.  When we attempt to develop our talents, we should be motivated by our desire to offer them unto the Lord.

It is amazing to notice how God works in our lives when we live for him.  Our feelings of rejection and discouragement tend to disappear.  Everything we do becomes more important because it is for the Lord.  Our primary desire is to use our talents for God's glory.  That is the only thing that matters.

If you have experienced any of the feelings I have described in this article, I pray you will offer all of your thoughts and talents unto God.  He has given them to you for a very important purpose.  Use your gifts for him today, and he will bless you in many different ways.  Soli Deo Gloria.
