Faculty Bio: Song Xie

Song Xie is a long-time soloist, chamber musician and section leader of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. His solo competition awards include the Chinese National Violin Competition, LSU Young Artist Concerto Competition, and he was a finalists at the Chautauqua Festival Young Artist Competition in New York. He has performed as a soloist with many formidably difficult solo repertoires including Sarasate's Carman Fantasy and Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 1 with Orchestras such as: Guangxi Institute Orchestra, The Guangxi Symphony Orchestra, China; the LSU Symphony Orchestra, Baton Rouge, LA; the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Jackson, MS.

As violinist of the Belhaven Piano Trio, along with Dr. Stephen Sachs, Piano Professor and Chair of the Music Department at Belhaven University, and MSO Principal Cellist Ben Randman, Mr. Song has actively performed in different chamber series around the state of Mississippi.

As a passionate string educator, Mr. Song is Assistant Professor of music in violin, viola, chamber music, and music director/conductor of the Belhaven String Chamber Orchestra at Belhaven University, and was President of the American String Teacher Association (ASTA) Mississippi Chapter from 2006-2008.  His students have won numerous young artist and concerto competitions in States of MS, AL, UT, NY, WA AR, SC. MTNA, ASTA and other national and International level Competitions. Many of his students actively teach in private studios, music schools and audition successfully as orchestra musicians. He frequently gives master classes and   judges local and regional string competitions. 

Mr. Song has also taught at Jackson State University, Mississippi College and Millsaps College. He has served as Assistant Concertmaster in the Lyric Mountain Festival, PA, Violin Faculty member at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, MI, Concertmaster of the Delta Symphony Orchestra, and Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, MS.

His summer performing and teaching includes MSO Premier Orchestra Institute, Millsaps Camber music Camp, MS,  Blue lake Fine Arts Camp, MI, CICA String Festival, AR, and this is his second year at Masterworks Festival.

Mr. Song  received his BA from the GuangXi Institute of Arts and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and his M.M.  from Louisiana State University. He has studied with many world-class professors including Shi-Xiang Zhang, Sally O'Reilly and Camilla Wicks.
