Greg Hotrum

Greg Hotrum, MWF '07 and '08, was invited to come to China for four years and help start the music program at SIAS University in China (300 miles SW of Bejing). His specific duties include teaching trombone and trumpet and playing in the Henan Provincial Symphony Orchestra as a recruiting tool. He reports that teaching brass is difficult because they do not start on their instruments until they arrive at the University (his students opened their instrument cases for the first time in their first lessons). In addition, they do not speak much English, as those classes begin simultaneously with their lessons. As a result, he teaches mostly by rote, though he has a list of Chinese words in his office and white board to draw pictures on! And while some things in China are difficult, Greg says that it is also very blessed.
