Faculty Bio: Gert Kumi
The Mehuhin Academy, MM The Juilliard School. A native of Albania, violinist Mr. Kumi has performed as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician all across Europe, Africa and North America. Mr. Kumi started playing the violin at the age of eight. Soon after, he began to win national recognition, winning top prizes and honors in Music Competitions in his native country. He received his Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School where he was a scholarship student of Stephen Clapp. He made his solo debut at Merkin Hall in New York City performing Chausson’s Concerto for Violin Op. 21 with the Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra in February 2006, and his solo debut at Alice Tully Hall in April 2003. Mr. Kumi has performed at the most important venues in New York City including the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and St. George Theater. He performed for Sir Elton John in July of 2004 as part of the Elton John American Tour at the Radio City Music Hall. From 1988-2000 he toured extensively throughout Europe with the Young Virtuosi of Tirana chamber orchestra where he played as Concertmaster and Soloist. Mr. Kumi has recorded live with the Young Virtuosi of Tirana for the Vatican Radio, ORT (Austrian Television), ZDF (German Television), RAI (Italian Television), Hungarian Radio and Television, and Swedish Radio and Television. In October of 1997, Bayerische Rundfunk (The German National Radio) recorded his concert at the Munich Music Academy with the Young Virtuosi of Tirana live. Mr. Kumi has been on the faculty at Masterworks Festival for the past four years. He was recently appointed Artist in Residence and Professor of Violin at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
