April Marie (Scholten) Sokolova
Opera AlumniMarie (Scholten) Sokolova, MWF '00, currently performs full-time with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, performing various small roles and covers as well as being in the core regular chorus. She is a two time regional finalist with the Metropolitan Opera National Council, where she was the recipient of numerous Encouragement awards. Other awards include the Marquis Award in the Young Artist Category at the Classical Singer Magazine Audcomps 2006, the National Association of Teachers of Singers (NATS) first-place in her category for six years in a row, as well as the Jon Vickers award for most promising undergraduate singer. She was the recipient of the Handel Award at the Orpheus Competition and has also been given numerous school-related vocal awards throughout her collegiate career. Some of her favorite operatic roles have included: Olga (Eugene Onegin) Cherubino, the Witch (Hansel and Gretel), the Sorceress (Dido & Aeneas) among others, and she is a great fan of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, favorite roles being Tessa, the Queen of the Fairies and Katisha. Ms. Sokolova is a graduate of DePauw University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree. Ms. Sokolova has a passion for teaching, and teaches private students in her home, as well as various summer workshops and classes. She currently resides in Chicago with her husband Philip and their cat, the Princess Rat-Bear.
