Andrew Somerville is from Edinburgh in Scotland. He first attended Masterworks in Summer 2003 and has remained involved by helping out with the Masterworks Europe Festivals. He recently moved to Chicago to study for a Masters degree in saxophone performance at Northwestern University's Beinen School of Music, where he is a student of the legendary saxophonist Dr Frederick L. Hemke. Andrew previously studied with Kyle Horch and Martin Robertson at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was the first saxophonist ever to be awarded the College's prestigious Artist Diploma.

Andrew performs regularly as a concerto soloist and recitalist. He has recently appeared at festivals in Annecy (France) and Trondheim (Norway) and has also given recitals at the Royal Overseas League in London and at the British Saxophone Congress. In 2008 Andrew won the Marlow International Concerto competition, and as a result gave a critically acclaimed performance of Ibert’s Concertino da Camera with the Southbank Sinfonia at Cadogan Hall also in London.

In addition to his solo work Andrew is also a committed chamber musician and is a member of the Sax-Ecosse and Sirocco saxophone quartets. Notable performances with these groups include recitals at the 13th World Saxophone congress and at major London venues including the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre, St Martin-in -the Fields, and at the Southbank Cente as Park Lane Group Young Artist’s Series.

Andrew will Graduate from Northwestern in July 2009 and hopes to return to undertake a doctoral degree after taking a few years off to build his freelance career in the UK.
